CD Review - Segismundo Toxicomano - una Bala

SEGISMUNDO TOXICOMANO – UNA BALA

SEGISMUNDO TOXICOMANO (Sigismund Drug Addicts) are a band I was introduced to me by Stu Taylor from STP Records they are a Punk rock band from Spain, yes I know!!! not only are there bands in the UK I still haven’t heard or discovered but also in other countries haha, I love discovering new bands even more than revisting those I already know and love don’t you?

So I contacted the Bands manager for some info on the band, this guy was so passionate about the band and so helpful which is refreshing and exciting, I always enjoy finding people as passionate about Punk as I am, so to the CD its called Una Bala A BULLET and I managed to find translations for most of the titles (some I couldn’t and some it’s the same as in English so this just gives you an idea of what the songs are about) they are all sung in Spanish so not only am I keen to hear what they sound like, but also as to if I can listen to and enjoy a CD by a band singing in a language I cant understand…?

01 - Frente Agnóstico. (Agnostic Front) so track one starts a slow building rumble of bass then drums and guitar slowly enter and build until the song powers into a fast paced song, it rattles along with woah Singalong backing vocals, the main vocals are gruff but with passion and in tune, breakdown section midway keeps the interest up and this catchey (even in spanish which I cant join in with properly) melody has you bopping along, short neat solo and then it’s the final section and its all over too soon, so a good start, well mixed, well recorded and with great instrument sound…next

02 - Las Noches Siguen Sabiendo A Sangre.( The Nights still know blood)
. Ok similar pace but with more power and some great guitar licks added to this darker feeling track, again great melodies and more football terrace Singalong woahs, which are understandable in any language haha, this song is better than the first I think, a little more settled and angsty, am I bothered or struggling because of the language barrier?…of course fucking not, good punk is good punk and this is…….Good Punk..

Segismundo Toxicomano

03 - Apunta. (Points). Straight into the 3rd track similar pace and style to track 2 but with proper chanted backing vocals and the vocalist really lets go in this one with a meaty sounded voice on show, again the sound is tight and hard and very clear, loving it so far

04 - Hoy Como Ayer. After a clever intro where you hear the intro to the song on a radio before it breaks out into the song full force, this is a chugging Singalong anthemic muther fucker, full of Spanish punk passion and pride, punchy drums and gripping bass keep the tune on track with chugging guitar and a great little guitar lick over the top, best track so far and I can Singalong to the chorus HOY COMO AYERRRRRRRRRRR!!!, sorry gonna listen to this one again before I move on top stuff this, so 4 tracks in and I say get yourselves a copy of this CD just on the 4 so far, great punk from Spain

05 - Héroes. A little more speed here after the last but with yet more catchy Singalong anthemisms, the verse powers along at a fast pace with the chorus pulling back on the reigns to slow it up, very well executed and adds a nice additional touch

06 - Lobo Solitario. (Lone Wolf) howwwwwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllllllll, a great guitar lick leads us into this next song very reminiscent of PTTBs Mating calls of south American frogs, with the echoey guitar, then theres some touches that head more towards sepultura territory, very haunting this one an eerie sub town and adds a different texture to the band but again I like it big time.

07 - Fútbol. (Football) well if you love football then you will love this short sharp shout along quick track does exactly what it says on the tin reminds you of football and the terrace singsong and as someone who is not interested in football I still like this track too haha

08 - Último Asalto. (Last Assault) Back to more familiar territory here as we head back to the punk rock chuggery, some nice well timed breakdowns and a nasty little solo, simple and pure gives us another fine example of why this band should be on your hit list trust me they are gooooooood and when you think I do not have a clue what they are singing about the songs have to be good to hold my attention, and they do like superglue under your foreskin

Segismundo Toxicomano

09 - Dame Más. (Give Me More) Give me more!!! And they do another blast I was just about to right this one off as an ok track when they threw in some great guitar work and a melody to shred your skull on, so yes another great pacey punk track similar to others but still with little rays of difference to keep me interested

10 - Guerrilla. Chugging guitars, punchy drums, rattling bass and good firm vocals, it’s a decent track but nothing new here they haven’t done better on other songs, not a duff one just no legend

11 - La Tormenta (The Storm) hmmm again another one more of the same its just not gripping me and I am drifting

12 - Stupid. Feedback, pounding drums, chanting vocal, push us into the next song this one is rising out of the same same trap and has my interest spiked again as it rattles its chains and my bones too, slapping bass runs the mid section with a sneer in the vocal and it is all too soon sliding to a close Better boys better I was starting to worry that the steam was running out

13 - Navarro. kicking its heels up the ST machine rattles into another stage with this, fuel injected instrumental, interesting and packed with neat guitar work keeps you interested and is another winner in my book, the textures and feeling in this is really refreshing and another blinder..

14 - Cabrón. Punches its way in and with its neat countrified riffage and street punk Singalong wordage this again has me rocking along its Boss sound putting the band back in charge and its short sharp now its gone I want more stance works well and leaves me wanting more haha MORE!!

Segismundo Toxicomano

15 - Humano. (Human) and so to the last song, high powered guitar ruff stuff leads us on another journey with heavy rocking over tones and some more Singalong chanting this track has an end feel about it and seems a fitting track to end on, its left a good smile on my face that’s for sure, and so as the last track fades into the distance I am left wondering did that work? Yes it did
I had a fun journey, the band are very talented and kept me interested for the main part, the language barrier is always going to create a slight gap as you cant get right into the whole of the song, and you cant hear what it is they are so passionate about or align yourself to it, and so you are left reliant on the tune pulling you through and in this case there was one or two songs where I was left wanting, but as I said considering I cant connect to the vocal aspect of the songs they gotta be good to have kept me interested and so I would urge you to buy this CD as its got plenty of Punk rock Gems to warrant the Cash, the band put there heart and soul into it, what more can you ask than that, I give this CD 8/10 got my yellow feathers flapping.

Buy it you buggers

I hear from Stu Taylor that the band are hopefully coming over to the UK to do a few dates in the summer so I for one will be getting along to one of those shows, and if they don’t make it over then I may just have to pack the Van and Roadtrip my band over there to join them in Spain, I also hear the band has a new CD that is apparently even better than this one, well If it is then that will be a fucking great CD, so I will be getting a copy of that one and I will meet you back here to discuss.

Go have a look at this band and get some of there music you will Punking well like it like I do

CD Review - Mispelt - Double A side CD Single

MISPELT – DEAR ME / DEAD MAN WALKING (LIVE) Double A side CD Single

Question: - What do you do if your forth coming Album is a long way off and you want to get some of your Material out there?
Answer: - You take some Good Quality Live recordings of a Brand New Song and a Re worked Old Song and release them as a Stop Gap Double A side CD Single. And that’s what the Mispelt have done.

Mispelt Dear Me

Now as anyone who knows me knows, I met the Mispelt a good few years ago and over that time and the numerous Mini tours, gigs and social gatherings we have spent together, we have become very close a Family, so to say I can totally Review this single without being Biased at all would be impossible even for me, so I wont, what I will say is if they did a crap song I would tell them and I am never short of opinion haha, lets throw some controversy in there from the start and say listening to these two songs makes me even more certain its time the guys stopped including Junkfood Generation in there set so regularly ( in my opinion) and concentrated on gems like these and what’s to come he he so now to the two songs on here

DEAR ME (the new one) We enter with some crowd racket that leads to Dunks intro and into the song ( I must at this point mention the quality of the recording clear and crisp with all instruments clearly and cleanly audible )and so a power chord driven cry to hold on which is taken up by gathered rabble starts this song before building up and then surprisingly crashing into a Skanky Ska driven verse powered along by Jens vocal and Dunk tickling the edges with backing vocals, pushing into a powerful battle cry chorus again will get anyone gathered listening joining in, a second verse and then its chorus all the way from there till the end with Jen increasing the pressure and passion as it builds, as always her talent shines through, I defy anyone to not be impressed by her the power so controlled with passion, angst, guttural monkey screams, energy abounding and all wrapped up with an innocent smouldering naughtiness and then there’s the rest of the band of course haha, powering away on the stage effortlessly and with precision to be admired (well mostly the odd chink appears from time to time to give the rest of us hope haha)

Mispelt Dear Me

DEAD MAN WALKING (Sandman Edit) (the Re worked one) We emter with pounding drums ingeniously assisted by Steve’s Sandman Homage before Dunks rumbling bass line brings the song in for real (Note to Dunk I have heard you do this song a few times and I know you are excited to get it started but its much more effective if you let Steve finish his little guitar intro before starting haha) a piercing guitar haunts the atmosphere as the mist rolls away and as the vulture swoops battle starts and in we fly to a pit stirring fast mashup of punk and metal combining to give us some great rock and roll, Dunks backing vocals adding to the power of the verse and Kevs drum work holds the hole thing together with delicious drum rolls and stick spins, before we enter a passionate pleading mid section that fires us skyward with a fret melting monster of a solo short sharp but oh so good and before you know it the end, wow hardly time to draw breath with this power packed one, my head is fried I love it haha, more, more, more….

Mispelt Dear Me

So that’s it 2 Live tracks recorded at the Legendary Punk on the Corner Christmas Chaos Party 23rd December 2011 an event that will go down as One of the Best in 2011 and this single proves it available from the band and there Merchmiesters Trouble and Chubby Tea at Gigs, I urge you to get a copy you will not be disappointed.

CD Review - Dirt Box Disco - Are You Ready? EP
Posted on: Sun , Jan 08 06:37 PM

Well packaged little CD this one. Only in cardboard but it’s striking red colour, goofy silhouettes and the band name certainly stand out. The back cover is very punk with a scribbled font telling the world the songs they’ve made and who the hell they are! Some amusing stage names from these guys I must admit.

The band kick off this EP with ARE YOU READY which is a very Ramones-esque  rock ‘n’ roll number. The vocals instantly stand out with excellent range and tone and they suit the song very well. The first time I heard this song was the first play of the CD which was in the office at work. I loved it – Instant hit! However when refreshing my memory while at home listening to the CD again I realised that after one listen it began to grate on me slightly and by the 3rd listen I wanted to press skip.

Dirt Box Disco

Moving on we have BURNING! A gutsy guitar driven track and way less repeatative than the opener. Sing-a-long qualities although the vocals don’t shine like they did on ARE YOU READY.  Some beautiful guitar work by “Danny Fingerz” throughout. Only just over 2 minutes in length but straight to the point and enjoyable.

TRAGIC ROUNDABOUT goes back to that Ramones sound as it opens with gang vocals and sound claps. Reminds me very much of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School etc! A great track and keeps the EP flowing well. The voice of “Weab.I.Am” once again keeps the ears in “Attentive” mode. Structurally the song is simple as with most punk bands but it serves it purpose.

RUM AND COLA is not only one of my favourite drinks but my favourite song from DIRT BOX DISCO. I don’t even care that it appears not to be about alcohol but love!! Once again its fun, rockin’ and as a fan of Ramones, Rancid and (my home town Ipswich hero’s) The Addicts I really enjoyed it. Guitars have a great punchy sound, vocals grab your attention, a bassline to show “Deadbeatz Chris” knows his fretboard and generally the whole song has enough to kick the face straight off a badger.

Dirt Box Disco

Lastly the band close with CROSS IN THE BOX. Would have been wrong I guess to have punk EP without a political song. The speed picks up and the band get more aggressive with the gang vocals, heavily distorted guitars and the double speed drumming from “Maff”. Superb riffs leading into the track and throughout.

Generally the whole EP is great and if any band deserves to be on a bill with Rancid then I agree that whoever made the decision to chuck these guys on Rebellion Festival in August doing just that made the right decision.  The bands debut album is available from STP Records in the summer. I hope to get my hands on that!
